The two major problems in the development of new drugs are low aqueous solubility and oral bioavailability. Although, drug delivery via route is most preferred for years but it also has some drawbacks. Various techniques improving have been developed, however success these depends on physical chemical properties under development. In recent years, mucoadhesive gained high popularity comparison to other routes as can circumvent drawbacks conventional system such first pass metabolism, enzymatic degradation, GI toxicity drugs, instability acidic or alkaline environment poor dosage forms developed recently including tablets, patches, films, ointments, gels etc. objective current review provide a comprehensive overview mechanism theories behind mucoadhesion, factors affecting different forms, polymers used formulations, characterization techniques, marketed products scenario & future challenges.
